  15. Pilgrims' Plight

  17. <p>     The hajj, the annual Muslim pilgrimage to the holy cities of
  18. Mecca and Medina, may be spiritually uplifting, but it has
  19. often proved physically dangerous. The grim toll:
  20. </p>
  21. <p>     Last week: A chartered plane carrying 247 Muslims home to
  22. Nigeria crashed leaving Jidda, killing all aboard.
  23. </p>
  24. <p>     1990: At least 1,426 were trampled to death or suffocated
  25. in a tunnel near the holy sites.
  26. </p>
  27. <p>     1987: An attempt to quell Iranians staging a violent
  28. political protest against the U.S., the Soviet Union and Israel
  29. left 402 dead, 649 wounded in Mecca.
  30. </p>
  31. <p>     1980: A jet departing from the Saudi capital of Riyadh
  32. caught fire when one of the passengers lighted a butane stove
  33. in an aisle to brew tea, killing 301, mostly Saudi Arabians and
  34. Pakistanis.
  35. </p>
  36. <p>     1974: A chartered Dutch DC-8 ferrying 182 Indonesian
  37. pilgrims to Mecca crashed in Sri Lanka, resulting in their
  38. deaths.
